Quality Improvement Review (QIR)

The Quality Improvement Review (QIR) is the process that the College uses to review the practice of Saskatchewan pharmacies.

The focus of the review process is coaching and assisting pharmacy staff in their quality improvement efforts, which is intended to help achieve the desired culture of safety within Saskatchewan pharmacies.

The focus of the reviews centres around safety activities, including medication incident reporting and reviewing the Medication Safety Self-Assessment (MSSA) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) plan, with the goal of ensuring all pharmacy staff are actively looking for ways to decrease incidents and ensure medication safety is continually reviewed and addressed.

In addition to the above, there is an assessment of the maturity of the safety culture within the community pharmacy, with the goal of ensuring an overall movement toward a strong culture of safety within all Saskatchewan community pharmacies.

A review of pharmacy practice is also completed which includes but is not limited to prescribing, advanced method, specialty services, etc. to ensure practice is according to federal, provincial, and SCPP requirements and to provide assistance to pharmacy staff to understand SCPP policies, procedures and legislation in order to provide the safest care possible.

Note that a cost shall be incurred for any in-person QIR scheduled as a consequence of the pharmacy being unable to utilize the screen sharing program being used by SCPP.
